Sometimes, our body needs a little help healing and regenerating new, healthy tissue.
That's where IASTM therapy comes in. IASTM means 'Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization,' and is designed to do exactly that-move your tissues to encourage healing and break apart adhesion with a little help from a handheld instrument.
Scar tissue and fascial adhesions can cause decreased flexibility, range of motion restrictions and even chronic muscle tension.
IASTM is designed to break up adhesions and tension within your body with the goal of helping new, healthy tissue form. During an IASTM session, we'll use a metal instrument directly on your skin with lotion to help identify restrictions, and then apply moderate pressure to the underlying tissue. The goal is to trigger an inflammatory healing response. This will stimulate the production of new collagen and proper, functional, pain-free healing.
IASTM sessions are often used in conjunction with other modalities, including chiropractic adjustments, myofascial release massage and even dry needling. At the end of the day, we believe in providing treatment that helps you get well and stay well for the long haul.
Wondering if IASTM is right for you? We've compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions so that you don't have to guess! If you have a question that isn't answered below, we invite you to give our practice a call-we're happy to walk you through an answer.
We'll always consider each patient's tolerance before we begin treatment-our goal is to get you results, which will require pressure, but we do not aim to directly cause you pain. Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. If you're ever uncomfortable during a treatment, please speak up so we can make adjustments to your care.
Anyone who has muscle tightness, fascial adhesions, or scar tissue can benefit from IASTM. Benefits of IASTM include:
Sometimes patients see results after just one session! However, depending on the severity of your injury, it may take several visits to notice an improvement.
The beauty of IASTM, is that it can be done on ANY MUSCLE! Common issues that we use IASTM for:
Although bruising can sometimes occur with IASTM, it is not the goal of treatment. Petechiae (surface level bruising), is common when friction forces are applied to the skin and will usually clear up in a day or two after treatment. Patients can also experience muscle soreness the next day - similar to a deep tissue massage. We recommend drinking plenty of water the day of treatment.
